Welcome To The Jungle
Welcome to the jungle where rain is falling, and the birds are chirping. Even at the edge of a busy road, there is a quiet kind of peace. At last, the words are returning to me in a way they haven’t for days.
Once again, I find myself in Caribbean Costa Rica—a place that continues to call me back. This is now my fourth visit, which feels meaningful for someone who once chased every shiny new thing. As my trip comes to a close, I’m reflecting on the gift of both giving and receiving during my time teaching and volunteering at a transformational retreat.
A Personal Growth Journey That Changed Everything
I first arrived here in 2022, completely burned out from navigating the uncertainty of the COVID years. Like many people seeking burnout recovery, I didn’t realize how much I needed to pause.
In many ways, this place helped rebuild me. At the same time, it cracked me open.
Since then, returning to the routines of everyday life has felt different. Growth changes you. And once you begin a true personal growth journey, it becomes harder to ignore what no longer aligns.
Why Vulnerability Feels So Hard (But Matters So Much)
Opening yourself to vulnerability—being seen, expressing emotion, and trusting others—can feel uncomfortable. In fact, it often feels unnatural because we’ve been conditioned to protect ourselves.
At first, I notice myself performing. After all, we’ve been taught that first impressions matter most. Because of that, we tense up. We avoid eye contact. We feel awkward.
However, something shifts with time.
As the walls begin to fall, connection becomes easier. And with that, a deeper sense of belonging emerges.
The Power of Community Connection
Returning here year after year has taught me that community connection isn’t about what’s said or done—it’s about how people make you feel.
As Maya Angelou once said:
“They won’t remember what you said. They won’t remember what you did. But they will remember the way you made them feel.”
That truth is at the heart of healing through community.
In contrast, many of us—especially in the United States—are taught to value independence and privacy above all else. We chase space, distance, and separation.
Yet when I reflect on my happiest moments, I remember living in a small, imperfect studio apartment. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was alive.
There were shared moments, spontaneous gatherings, and a sense of togetherness.
And that’s what mattered.
Simplicity, Presence, and Transformational Travel
During this trip, I shared a small jungle bungalow with a dear friend. It was simple—beds, a small kitchen, a bathroom—but it had everything we needed.
More importantly, it had presence.
This is the essence of transformational travel—not luxury, but connection. Not excess, but meaning.
Time and again, experiences like this reinforce one truth: we need each other.
As I begin to shed the conditioning that pushes us toward isolation, something shifts within me.
Fear softens. Connection deepens.
Age, language, and background begin to matter less. Instead, we become what we’ve always been—humans navigating life together.
This is where mindfulness and connection intersect. It’s about being present enough to truly see one another.
Learning to Dance in the Rain
During one of my classes, I shared something that continues to resonate with me:
If you only go out in the sunshine, you’ll never learn to dance in the rain.
That idea speaks to resilience.
Dancing in the rain means embracing imperfection. It means letting go of control and finding joy anyway.
When we practice finding joy in imperfection, we become more adaptable. As a result, we handle life’s challenges—delays, frustrations, uncertainty—with more ease.
Connection Is Available Everywhere
While it may feel easier to access this mindset in a Costa Rican jungle, the truth is that it’s available anywhere.
You can find it:
- At a local park
- In a fitness class
- At a coffee shop
- Even on a delayed flight
Connection doesn’t require a destination. It requires intention.
