Importance of Energy Management

Through a burnout
If you’ve been through a burnout, chances are you were not familiar with the importance of energy management. After experiencing burnout, you know how delicate the recovery can be. A common misconception of burnout is that it is prevalent with people who hate their job. I’d argue the opposite. It’s actually more common for those who love their job. I know firsthand that I got burnt out on a job that I loved.
Slow Burn
And just as my burnout was a slow burn, so was my recovery. It took time for my flame to reignite, and it’s important to me to keep that flame lit. This matters because my livelihood depends on my ability to work. But more importantly, I enjoy my work and I want to be my best self for those I work in the service of.
Busy Season
During the height of my busiest season, when I can feel the wind trying to blow out my flame, I ask myself, “how do I manage my energy so that I can keep loving the work that I do?”
I….

Notice
We can’t regulate our emotions if we can’t recognize them. Since being introduced to it, I’ve found the mood meter to be an incredible tool to stay accountable to this. You can access this tool for free via the How We Feel app. Pro-tip: set it to remind you at random to check in. This is one of the few reminders that I allow on my phone.

Manage Screen Time
During times of busyness, it’s easy to spend way too much time staring at the screen. While this may support our inherent desire to cross items off the to-do list, it can deteriorate our minds and bodies. Use the pomodoro technique to work in short blocks. Take breaks, get fresh air, do mini-meditations, and have a dance party. Just get the FUCK up from that desk.

Stressful Day?
Try Sound Healing. As an in-person facilitator of training, I know that every so often, I’m going to have a group that sucks the life out of me. When that happens, extra care is needed. A good sound healing can get energy moving in the body. In person is best, but you can always find them on Insight Timer.

Find Community
Sometimes we forget that we are in this together. As a road warrior, I know it can be tempting to hide in my hotel room. But if you follow my advice and the Pomodoro technique to get the most important things done, go out. Sit at the hotel bar or find a neighborhood place and meet a new friend. This can, but does not have to, involve alcohol. The idea is to experience the humanity we have in common with others. Some of the best ‘therapists’ I know have been bartenders.

Sleep
This is probably the toughest one for me. Strange beds all alone are just brutal. When traveling by air, I’m a little too paranoid to bring my edibles. So, I’ve learned a few things…
-
- Have a nighttime meditation right before bed. This beats doom scrolling and allows for the processing of thoughts. It takes the pressure of “I have to fall asleep now” off the mind.
- Lavender Oil. Have a sniff and then put a few drops on your feet. I don’t know why this works, but it does.
- Take Calms Forte. This homeopathic remedy is the next best thing to Indica to promote sleep.
- Ween off the screen. If you are a scroll-before-bed kind of person, I know it can be a hard habit to break. Try switching to a book. While it may still stimulate you, it’s less habit-forming. Endless scroll is designed to be addictive. Chapters in a book are designed to be breaking points. Need a new read? Here’s some of my favorites.
