Self-Care After Work Events:
A Life Coach’s Guide to Burnout Recovery
Work Events
Self-care after work events is something that most people don’t think about, but it is so needed in this day and age. For anyone who has ever had a professional job, you’ve likely gone to training over the course of several days or a conference. These events can be amazingly inspiring while also sucking the life out of us, a strange juxtaposition, I know.
If we allow it, by being present, we can truly focus on being in an environment where the only objective is learning. Yes, that means not giving in to the pull of your phone. There’s also a tremendous opportunity to connect with people who speak your language, the language of your profession.
The Toll
On the flip side, there’s a lot of sitting. There’s a lot of information to take in, and some presenters are better than others. There’s also usually a lot of food, and it’s tempting not to always make good choices. Furthermore, the exchange for presence is that the work and personal responsibilities will begin to pile up.
Home from Training
As I write this, I am home from a week of training for my new contract, which took place in mid-December, a time that is hectic by nature despite my best efforts. Unrealistically, I thought that when I got home, I would do all the things:
- Laundry
- Bills
- Christmas prep
- The Yoga Nidra Teacher training that I keep postponing
- Prep for my workshop at the upcoming Wild Essence Festival
- Get back on track with my eating
- Marketing my new Gift Certificates
What the actual FUCK was I thinking?
Friday Night
On Friday night, when I arrived home, it became apparent to me that I was a zombie and that the only focus for me would be a reset. Yes, I feel behind on just about everything. But the importance of kindness to myself and acceptance of my limits was paramount.
What this looked like…
I slept in. After a week away, there is nothing like my own bed, with my sweet husband by my side. Our investment in a heated mattress pad this year was just what my sore muscles needed.
Yes, I did my laundry. Because the act of unpacking my suitcase and getting somewhat organized helped me feel less chaotic.
Self-Care
Then, a walk, despite it being gloomy and cold, I know it would do me some good. There’s an amazing bike path near me that is the perfect blend of nature and just a simple straight line, where I don’t have to think much. Some of my best insights have come from walking that path.
And that was it. I didn’t really do anything, and yet I have amazing clarity. With today being Sunday, I’m happy to sit here and watch the snow fall. It’s the good kind, not the shitty kind that has to be shoveled.
Sounding Healing
I’ll likely head to the Farmer’s Market to get some good nourishment for the week. I’m feeling called to a sound healing, and Insight Timer will have to do in lieu of going in person. Perhaps even a dance party with neurodivergent eargasms, my absolute favorite bilateral stimulation playlist on Spotify. Connection with my beloved will also be important, and that will happen later at our happy place, Rushford & Sons.
Monday will come. But for now, I will treat myself like the human machine that I am. When the machines don’t work, the first question we often ask is –
Did you reboot?
Well, yes, as a matter of fact, I did.
